Laptop USB Startup Key not detected at boot
4.5
The laptop asks for the USB key but doesn't see it when plugged in.
Symptoms
- "Insert USB key"
- Boot hang
- No activity light
Possible Causes
- USB 3.0 port (use 2.0)
- BIOS setting
- Corrupt key file
Step-by-Step Fix
1
Use USB 2.0 Port
Some BIOS versions can't read USB 3.0/3.1 ports at boot.
2
Enable Legacy USB
Ensure the BIOS can see USB drives before the OS loads.
3
Check for .BEK file
Ensure the hidden .BEK file is in the root of the USB drive.
When to See a Technician
Try a different USB port, preferably one that is directly connected to the motherboard (not a hub).
